No new index planned to measure quality of life

March 28, 2011
The government will continue to use the existing index and has no plan to develop a new one.
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no plan to develop the General Well-Being (GWB) Index because the existing Malaysian Quality of Life (MQL) Index is still applicable to measure the quality of life among the people, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department SK Devamany said the MQL Index was based on quantitative values and more concrete compared to the GWB Index which was based on perception and therefore subjective in nature.
He said that the MQL Index, formulated in 1999, contained 42 variables representing 11 components, covering economic and social.
“Overall in 2008, the MQL Index showed an increase of 15.9 points from the figure in 1990. All components had shown an increase except for the environmental component which declined by 5.9 points, and public safety, by 17.2 points,” he said.
He was replying to Abdul Rahman Dahlan (BN-Kota Belud) who wanted to know if the government would similarly use the GWB Index being used by other countries to measure the people’s well-being.
